Joy: Day 9
Joy to the World, the Lord Has Come
By Paul Lanci

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Psalm 16:11 NIV

Joy. What does it mean and why do we hear so much about it at this time of year? Psalm 16, one of the Messianic psalms, suggests that joy is something we can be filled with in God’s presence.

God’s gift of His Son, Jesus, brings us a special kind of joy — the presence of God Himself coming to earth to live and die for us. This joy takes on many expressions and is available to us at all times through the Holy Spirit, who is the presence of God with us today:

  • Joy as a ringing cry or shout: Those who sow with tears will reap with shouts of joy. (Psalm 126:5, HCSB)
  • Joy as exultation, pleasure, and delight: Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart for I am called by your name.(Jeremiah 15:16, HCSB)
  • Joy as singing aloud: My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you — because you have redeemed me. (Psalm 71:23, HCSB)
  • Joy as an enveloping security that comes from recognizing God’s grace and favor whatever our circumstances: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you various trials(James 1:2, HCSB)

When considering these verses, we are reminded that true joy comes from God alone. Joy flows from God into us, then through us to others as we choose to accept that joy, live it, and share it with those around us.

Based on these verses from God’s Word, let’s imagine a new way of thinking about joy: an internal reservoir, fed by the Holy Spirit, that bubbles up and out of us, expressing itself in shouts of song and praise, fresh faith, and secure hope.

Amidst all the lights, decorations, gifts, and traditions this Christmas, let’s overflow with song-worthy, delightful, everlasting Joy reflecting our Savior, Jesus!

Pray

Dear Father in Heaven, in this season that celebrates the arrival of complete joy into the world in Your son Jesus, please allow my eyes to see things the way You do. Keep my outlook filled with hope and thankfulness for each moment. Let my joy be complete in You and let that joy overflow regardless of my circumstances. Let me trust in You to carry me daily. Help me to find my joy solely in You. Remind me each day that true joy starts by trusting in Your promises for a better tomorrow based on Your character. Let me celebrate joy each and every waking moment, regardless of my circumstances. Amen.
