Joy: Day 8
Finding Joy During Turbulent Times
By Kim Evans

Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;
instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;
therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;
they shall have everlasting joy.
Isaiah 61:7 ESV

COVID. Political and family division. War. Natural disasters. Death. Destruction. Shootings. Isolation. Inflation. Grief, sadness, anger, and loss. Disappointment in God. We all are facing difficulties this year, and the holidays can boost the stress we’re experiencing.

Sometimes we question if life will get better or if we will ever experience peace and joy again. When our focus is on the troubles of this world, we will experience disappointment and, possibly, a crisis of faith. Where is God in it all? How could He possibly allow all of this to happen?

In the midst of these difficulties, the words of the prophet Isaiah give us renewed hope:

“[Y]ou shall be called the priests of the Lord; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God.” (Isaiah 61:6 ESV)

“Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy.” (Isaiah 61:7 ESV)

“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness …” (Isaiah 61:10 ESV)

Jesus came into this world to bring us His joy and His hope. We are seen as “clean” and called “beloved,” and given freedom from darkness. Earlier in the same chapter, Isaiah prophesies about Jesus as the source of all these blessings:

“He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.” (Isaiah 61:2-3 NLT)

Our troubles, while real, are “light and momentary” compared to the greatness of eternal joy that Jesus makes possible (2 Cor. 4:17). Remember this Christmas that even in the midst of your trials, Jesus has come with an eternal offer of the joy you need for every season.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for coming into this world! Paul says in Colossians that I am ‘chosen, holy, and dearly loved.’ Thank you for choosing me before the beginning of time, and for loving me so deeply and perfectly. Please fill me with Your joy and Your love this Christmas season, and help me to trust you through my trials. Amen.

Family Application

Get a roll of store-bought sugar cookies dough. Using a star cookie cutter, make star shapes. Decorate them with sprinkles and use these questions to prompt a discussion about Jesus’ birth:

  • What do you think it was like to see such a bright star in the sky the night Jesus was born?
  • Have you ever seen a really bright star?
  • Have you ever wondered why God put a bright star in the sky?
  • Why do you think the wise men followed the star?
